Overview: The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II Lens (SEL2470GM2) is a professional-grade constant-aperture standard zoom lens built for Sony's full-frame E-mount cameras. As the second generation of Sony's most versatile G Master zoom, it delivers a significant leap forward in optical performance, autofocus capability, and portability. Covering the essential 24-70mm range at a constant f/2.8, this lens is the go-to choice for wedding, event, portrait, editorial, and documentary photographers — as well as videographers demanding the highest quality in a single, all-purpose zoom. It is the smallest and lightest full-frame f/2.8 standard zoom in its class.

Key Features:

  • 24-70mm Constant F2.8 Zoom Range: The versatile 24-70mm focal range covers wide-angle to short telephoto in a single lens, with a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range for consistent exposure and depth of field control. On APS-C bodies, it provides a 36-105mm equivalent field of view.
  • Next-Generation G Master Optics: An advanced optical construction includes two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and two Super ED glass elements. Together with a floating focus mechanism, this combination delivers outstanding sharpness and contrast at all zoom positions and aperture settings, controlling chromatic aberration, astigmatism, distortion, and coma throughout the frame.
  • Exquisite F2.8 Bokeh: A new 11-blade aperture unit, combined with precise control of spherical aberration during both design and manufacture, produces beautifully smooth and natural bokeh throughout the zoom range. The two high-precision XA elements — manufactured to 0.01-micron accuracy — suppress the onion-ring bokeh artefacts common in lesser lenses.
  • Quad XD Linear Motor Autofocus: Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, combined with a floating focus mechanism and advanced lens control algorithms, deliver fast, precise, and near-silent autofocus with excellent subject tracking — capable of keeping pace with cameras shooting at up to 30 frames per second. AF performance is maintained even with the aperture stopped down.
  • Optimised for Video: Focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming have all been minimised to maintain compositional accuracy during video recording. The XD Linear Motors and new aperture unit contribute to quiet, low-vibration operation, and the lens supports the Breathing Compensation function available in compatible Sony Alpha and Cinema Line bodies.
  • Compact and Lightweight Design: Weighing just 695g (24.5 oz) — over 20% lighter than its predecessor — and 16mm shorter in length, with an overall volume reduction of approximately 18%, this is the most compact and portable full-frame f/2.8 standard zoom in its class.
  • Close-Focus Capability: A minimum focusing distance of just 0.21m (8.3 in) at 24mm and 0.30m (11.8 in) at 70mm, combined with a maximum magnification of 0.32x, enables impressive close-up shooting across the zoom range.
  • De-clickable Aperture Ring with Lock: A dedicated aperture ring with a switchable click mechanism can be set to smooth, stepless de-clicked operation for video work. An "A" lock position enables automated exposure modes.
  • Zoom Smoothness Switch: A zoom ring smoothness switch allows the resistance of the zoom ring to be adjusted to suit personal preference or shooting style.
  • Two Customisable Focus Hold Buttons: Dual focus hold buttons on the lens barrel can each be assigned to a range of functions from the camera body for fast, intuitive tactile control.
  • Dust and Moisture Resistant: A robust weather-sealed construction with a fluorine-coated front element provides reliable performance in demanding conditions, repelling water, oil, and other contaminants.

Answers Many Questions about Naval Developments
Format: Hardcover
The history offers a detailed and well organized account of the Royal Navy as it transitioned from sail to steam. Coverage included personalities, technology, tactics and strategy. The combination provided a complete appreciation of the dynamics at play, some unexpectedly. The details might be a bit much for a casual reader but offered plenty of avenues for research not available or compiled in one source. I look forward to the final volume, which should describe another watershed era.

Great Book with a different perspective
Format: Hardcover
This will be a short review of a very long book. I ordered the book expecting more of a history of the British Navy, but this is more of a history of Britain with respect to its navy. It is still excellent and authoritative, just different than I expected. I really appreciate a somewhat different perspective than I have found in some other books. For example, any discussion of Jackie Fisher I have read previously seemed to border on the hagiographic, whereas here he seems to get a very evenhanded appraisal. A great book, highly recommended.
